1973
Celine sings for the first time in front of a real audience at her brother’s
Michel wedding, on August 18th. She sang “Du fil, des aiguilles
et du cotton.” She followed up with a small concert at the Cachette
hotel from Joliette, leaving everybody amazed by her voice. She sang songs
belonging to her idol at the time, Ginette Reno, whose manager was Rene
Angelil, Celine’s future husband. TOP
1980
When she was 12, Celine told her mother she wanted to become a singer.
Together with her mother and her brother Jacques, they wrote the song,
“Ce n’etait qu’un reve.” She recorded a demo and
sent the cassette to well-known manager Rene Angelil, from Montreal. After
Jacques insisted, Rene finally listened to the tape and asked Celine and
her mother to come to his office. When she sang in front of him in the
office, he was so impressed he started to cry, and without any hesitations
he signed her as his only artist, mortgaging his house to release her

1981
Celine started to take singing lessons from Cecile Jalbert, and Rene contacted
famous French song writer Eddy Marney, who would write the majority of
her albums from the 80s. He wrote the lyrics and some of the melodies
for her very first album launched this year, “La voix du bon Dieu.”
She also launched a Christmas album, “Celine Dion chante Noel.”

1982
She went beyond the border of Quebec with the single “D’amour
ou d’amitie”, from the album “Tellement j’ai d’amour
pour toi”, which sold more than 700,000 copies in France. Celine
was the first Canadian to have a gold record in France.
In October, she was selected to represent France at the World Popular
Song Festival in Tokyo. She got the first prize, with the song “Tellement
j’ai d’amour pour toi”, dedicated to her mother. TOP
1983
In January she represented Canada at the MIDEM festival in Cannes, when
she won with the song “D’amour ou d’amitie”, beating
3,000 other artists. She registered a big success in France with her single,
“Mon ami m’a quittee.”
On July 30th, she held a concert in front of 45,000 people at the “Lac
des Dauphins”, in Montreal, which was recorded by Radio Canada and
broadcasted on September 18th.
Celine launched her fourth album in Quebec, “Les chemins de ma maison”,
which sold 150,000 copies. She won four awards at the ADISQ awards. At
the end of the year she launched another Christmas album, “Chants
et contes de Noel”. She left school the same year and hired a private

1984
On September 11 she sang “Une colombe” in front of Pope John
Paul II and 65,000 people, during the Pope’s visit to Quebec.
She launched the German versions of “D’amour ou d’amitie”
and “Mon amour m’a quittee” in Germany, the titles being
"Was bedeute ich dir" and "Mon ami geh nich fort".
At the end of August she launched the album “Melanie”, with
the single of the same name, dedicated to her niece Karine, who was suffering
from cystic fibrosis. In September she launched "Les plus grands
succes de Céline Dion" at a children’s hospital. Part
of the money from selling the album went to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
She won two ADISQ awards for this album.
Also, her album "Les oiseaux du bonheur" and the single "Mon
reve de toujours" were launched in France. TOP
1985
In the beginning of the year she went on tour in Quebec. It ended on May
31st with a concert at Place des Arts in Montreal, which was recorded
and released in December as her first live album, under the name "Celine
Dion en concert".
She was one of the artists that recorded “Les yeux de la faim”,
to fight against hunger in Ethiopia. She launched “C’est pour
toi” and recorded the single "Vois comme c'est beau",
for her sister Claudette’s album, as Celine is not the only one
in the family to record.
In October she launched the single "C'est pour vivre" in France.
Back in Quebec, she won five Felix awards.
She records her first soundtrack for the children’s movie "Operation
Beurre de Pinotte / The Peanut Butter Solution”, having songs both

1986
She took an 18 months break to relax and change her look. In the meantime,
Rene worked on getting a record deal for young Celine, Sony being the
first option. Although she was on holiday, she released two new songs
in France “Billy" and "En amour”. In Quebec the
compilation, "Les chansons en or" was released, having only
one new song, "Fais ce que tu voudras". TOP
1987
Celine makes a comeback with a new contract with Sony and a brand new
look, making the transition from a teenager to a woman. In April she launched
“Incognito”, changing from Eddy Marney to Luc Plamondon. TOP
1988
She held 42 concerts in a row at the Saint-Denis theatre in Montreal.
In April she takes part in the Eurovision song contest in Dublin, Ireland,
winning the first position with "Ne partez pas sans moi”. She
was watched by over 600 million people.
This is also the night when Celine and Rene became lovers.
She launched “Incognito” in France. She won four ADSIQ awards.

She prepares for her English career, taking English lessons.
She also records three duets: "Can´t live with you, can’t
live without you" with Billy Newton-Davis, "Wishful thinking"
with Dan Hill and "Listen to me" with Warren Wiebe. None of
these songs appear on any of her albums. TOP
1990
She has an amazing success with her first English album, “Unison”,
which was launched in April in 16 countries. It sells 600,000 copies in
Canada and two million worldwide. It was certified gold in the United
States.
She makes appearances in a lot of TV shows, including twice on The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno.
In Quebec, she is awarded for the Anglophone artist of the year. She refuses
the prize, saying she is Francophone, not Anglophone. TOP
1991
On January 5th, her single "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" reaches
number 4 on the Billboard chart, and stays there for 24 weeks.
In March she debuts as an actress, having the main role in the TV mini
series "Des fleurs sur la neige".
She wins the Juno awards for singer of the year and album of the year
(Unison).
On June 19th, she celebrates 10 years of career with televised show at
the Montreal Forum. She records “Voices That Care” with a
lot of other artists, written for the US forces from the Golf War.
In the autumn, she releases "Dion chante Plamondon", with four
songs from Starmania. In France the album was called "Des mots qui
sonnent". In October she wins a Felix award and a special award from
the Artists Union.
On October 29, she sings for Princess Diana and Prince Charles at the
National Art Center in Ottawa. At the end of the year, she signs a ten
million contract with Sony Music, being biggest contract ever signed by
Sony with a Canadian artist. The contract was for five albums, launched
over a period of ten years. TOP
1992
She receives her first World Music Award for best selling Canadian artist
in May. She also won the Juno award for best artist of the year. She sings
“Beauty and the Beast” at the Academy Awards, together with
Peabo Bryson. The song wins the Oscar for best song from a movie. She
launches her second English album, simply called “Celine Dion”.
During the summer she tours US as opening act for Michael Bolton. The
album goes gold, being her second in the US, and then goes platinum. In
the fall she tours Australia, Europe and Japan.
She gets two ADISQ awards and appears on the soundtrack of “Tycoon”,
the English version of Starmania. TOP
1993
She sings “Love Can Move Mountains” for the President of the
United States, Bill Clinton, during the “Celebration for Youth”
gala, at the Kennedy center in Washington, making fans out of the presidential
family.
On March 20 she receives the “Billboard International Creative Achievement
Award”, acknowledging her accomplishments worldwide. A day after,
she was the host of the Juno awards, sang to songs and won four awards.
In September one of her concerts at the Capitol in Quebec was recorded,
and was later released on video under the title “The colour of my
love concert".
At the ADISQ awards she won two awards. The first single from "The
Colour of My Love" album was “When I Fall In Love”, a
duet with Clive Griffin and the soundtrack of “Sleepless in Seattle”.
The album is launched on November 8 at the Metropolis club. “Think
Twice” became number one in a lot of countries, while “Misled”
was number one on the Billboard Dance top 100 for a few weeks.
Sony released a compilation of her early songs, called "Les premieres
annees". In December she registered a Christmas show for NBC, singing
"The Christmas song". She records "Plus haut que moi"
with Mario Pelchat, which appeared on his album. TOP
1994
She signs a 500,000 deal to promote Hudson Bay, one of the most famous
department store retailers. She also signed advertisement deals with Chrysler,
Simpson’s and Coca Cola for Diet Coke.
On February 12 “The Power of Love” reaches number one on the
Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles and stays there for four weeks. The
song is in the top 50 of the all time biggest hits.
At the Junos she gets the award for artist of the year for the fourth
time in a row. In September she records a concert at the famous Olympia
hall in Paris, becoming her second live album, under the name "Céline
a l'Olympia". She gets three awards at the ADISQ. She records a Christmas
song with Alvin and the Chipmunks, called "Petit Papa Noel",
included on the "A Very Merry Chipmunk” album.
On November 24 she receives the diamond record in Canada for selling over
one million copies of "The colour of my love", being the only
Canadian artist to have it. She appears on the "Kumbaya 1994"
compilation with “Send Me a Lover” and sings “La-bas”
with Jean-Jacques Goldman at the "Les enfoires au Grand Rex".
On December 17 she gets married to Rene Angelil, her manager. Her wedding
is broadcasted live on Canadian television and becomes the event of the

1995
She wins another World Music Award for best selling Canadian artist and
gets two Junos for "The colour of my love".
She launches “D’eux”, written and produced by Jean-Jacques
Goldman. Sales sore during the summer. It sells over 57,000 copies a day
in France. In less than seven months “D’eux” becomes
the best selling album in the French language in history. It’s the
best selling French album in Canada, the best selling album (all languages)
in France and becomes the first album to get a gold record in the UK.
Overall, it sold 8 million copies. TOP
1996
In the beginning of the year she receives the title "Chevalier de
l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" from the French government, with
the mention that she is the biggest Francophone artist in history. She
also receives a special Felix award for her entire career.
The first single from the “Falling Into You" album is released
on February 19, which in America and Asia is “Because You Loved
Me”, the soundtrack to “Up Close and Personal”, with
Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer, and in the rest of the world is
“Falling Into You”. The album is released in March worldwide.
It was one of the best selling albums ever. In France, it was number 1,
the number 2 being taken by her previous album, “D’eux”.
The single was number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 Singles for four weeks and
in top 5 for 16 weeks. “Because You Loved Me” is also the
biggest hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, being number 1
for 19 weeks. It was also the most requested song on radio for 14 weeks.
She gets yet another World Music Award for best selling Canadian artist.
On July 19 she sings “The Power of the Dream” at the opening
ceremony of Atlanta Olympic Games, in front of more than 100,000 people
on the stadium and over 3.5 billion viewers.
In September she begins her European tour, after giving over 80 shows
in North America and Australia. Towards the end of the month, “Falling
Into You” reaches number one on the Billboard chart and stays there
for three weeks.
In October she launches her third live album, “Live a Paris”,
recorded in 1995. A few weeks after it’s also released on video.
In November she becomes the only artist ever to have three albums in the
French top 20: “Live a Paris” on number one, “Falling
Into You” on number 6 and “D’eux” on number 16.
She wins five ADISQ awards and three Felix awards, for album of the year,
“D’eux”, concert of the year and singer of the year.
Rene receives an award for manager of the year and a special award.
On December 10 she gives a concert for charity foundation Quebecer Cystic
Fibrosis. At the end of the year, Sony announced Celine had 55 platinum
records in Canada. She is chosen artist of the year by VH1 viewers. TOP
1997
Celine continues her tour in Japan and Korea. She gets around 10 million
USD for giving a private concert for the Sultan of Brunei.
On February 26 she gets two of the most important Grammy awards: album
of the year and pop album of the year for “Falling Into You”.
In March she wins four Junos, becoming the artist with the most Juno awards.
On March 24, Celine sings “Because You Loved Me” and Barbra
Streisand’s “I Finally Found Someone” at the Academy
Awards.
On April 17 she is the star of World Music Awards, winning for best selling
Canadian artist, the best selling artist and best selling pop artist.
In May, “Falling Into You” leaves the Billboard top 10, after
being there for 59 weeks.
During the summer Celine learns how to play golf. She loves it so much
she buys her own golf course, Le Mirage, in Montreal.
In the beginning of October the first single from “Let’s Talk
about Love”, “Tell Him” a duet with her idol Barbra
Streisand, is released. The album is released on November 18. It sells
10 million copies in a heartbeat. In Canada it sells over one million
copies. Over all, it sells over 30 million copies, matching the success
of “Falling Into You”.
During the autumn, six biographies are released, four in French and two
in English, only one being authorized: “Celine” by Georges-Herbert
Germain. On December 1 she sings at the 50th anniversary of the wedding
of Queen Elisabeth II, in London. TOP
1998
She receives the Golden Globe for “My Heart Will Go On”, the
soundtrack of “Titanic”. She also wins an Oscar, “Titanic”
getting a total of 11 awards. During the Academy Awards ceremony, Celine
wears the famous “Le coeur de la mer” necklace”, featured
in the film. “My Heart Will Go On” beats all records. Her
album and Titanic’s soundtrack sell about 65 million copies together.
In autumn she releases a new French album, “S’il suffisait
d’aimer”, with ten songs written by Jean-Jacques Goldman and
two by Erick Benzi. In November she launches her third Christmas album,
the first in English, “There Are Special Times”, which includes
two duets with R Kelly and Andrea Bocelli and two songs with her entire
family. She records a TV special for CBS, which is broadcasted worldwide

1999
She gets American Music Awards and People Choice Awards in USA. At the
Grammy Awards and Academy Awards she sings “The Prayer” with
Andrea Bocelli. She wins to Grammy awards: record of the year and best
female pop performance, and four Juno awards.
Thing turn dramatic for Celine and Rene when doctors diagnose Rene with
throat cancer. He submits an operation right away. Celine cancels her
shows for about two month to be with him through the treatments, which
do their job, Rene being cancer free. On June 19 and 20 Celine gives what
she calls “the best shows of my life” on Stade de France in
Paris, having 90,000 people for each night. Rene sees and hears the shows
from her European tour from their home in Jupiter Island in Florida, via
satellite. In August she releases her fourth live album, “Au coeur
du stade”, recorded during the shows at Stade du France. It’s
also released on video.
In the autumn she releases “All the Way… A Decade of Song”,
comprising seven new songs and nine greatest hits. As their song is “All
the Way” of Frank Sinatra, she records it as a virtual duet.
After working non stop for almost 20 years, Celine and Rene decide it’s
time for a break. She enters a two year sabbatical. TOP
2000
On June 7 Celine announces she is pregnant after following in vitro fertilisation,
as she and Rene had been trying to have a baby since their wedding in
1994. In the autumn she records a duet with Quebec singer Garou, “Sous
le vent”. Garou is also managed by Rene and his company since 1999.
He calls Celine “his older sister.” TOP
2001
On January 25 Celine and Rene announce the birth of their son, Rene-Charles
(named after Rene and Celine’s grandfather, Charles). In August,
Rene-Charles is baptized at the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, the same
place where his parents got married. “Sous le vent” is launched
in the spring and it stays number one in France for half a year, winning
the award for best song at the Victoires de la musique. TOP
2002
Celine makes a comeback to the music scene, releasing a new English album,
“A New Day Has Come”. She names it “my first album”,
because she says it’s the first time she sings just for pleasure.
The album has a new sound, the president of Sony Music, Tommy Motola,
saying Celine has reached an unimaginable artistic greatness. The album
debuts at number one in 17 countries, a first for Celine. It sells eight
million copies.
Celine announces she’ll come back on stage with a great show named
“A New Day…”
in her own Las Vegas theatre, the Coliseum. TOP
2003
Celine starts her concerts in Las Vegas. The show is directed by Franco
Dragone, the creator of Cirque du Soleil.
She releases two new albums, “One Heart” and “1 fille
& 4 types”, the four guys being Jean-Jacques Goldman, Jacques
Veneruso, Erik Benzi and Gildas Arzel.
In January, Eddy Marney passed away, losing his fight with cancer. Celine
always says about Eddy that he is her “guardian angel”.
On November 30, Celine losses her “number one fan”, as she
often calls him, her father, to cancer. He is buried in Charlemagne. TOP
2004
On January 6, Celine receives a star on the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles,
USA. She dedicates it to her father. In August she receives the Diamond
Award at the World Music Awards, acknowledging her the female artist with
the biggest sales ever, over 175 million copies.
In October she releases “Miracle” a collection of lullabies
and babies photos made in collaboration with famous babies’ photographer
Anne Geddes. The album reaches number four in USA and number one in Canada,
also being in the top 10 of the best selling albums in the World.
